Alva's Medical College in Moodbidri aims to produce doctors who are compassionate as well as competent, Alva's Education Foundation chairman Dr. M. Mohan Alva has said, as reported by Udayavani.
The message comes as the college — formally Alva's Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre — begins its first academic year.
The college at a glance
- Seats: 150 MBBS seats, approved by the National Medical Commission from the 2026–27 academic year, according to Udayavani.
- University: Affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS).
- Location: Moodbidri (Mijar), Dakshina Kannada.
- Inauguration: 21 September 2026, by Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi.
- Tulu-speaking students: 54 of the 150 seats are for Tulu speakers, Dr. Alva told Udayavani.
Why "compassionate" matters
Patients remember how a doctor made them feel as much as the treatment itself. Listening carefully, explaining clearly and treating every patient with dignity are skills that matter as much as clinical knowledge — especially in rural and semi-urban areas, where trust in the local doctor is everything.
Built on decades of service
The new college builds on Alva's long history in healthcare and education. The foundation's Alva's Health Centre has served the region for around four decades, and its campus already runs Ayurveda, Homoeopathy, nursing and allied health institutions alongside schools and colleges.
Dr. Mohan Alva is also widely known for his cultural work, including the Alva's Virasat and Alva's Nudisiri festivals.
What it means for students
For aspiring doctors from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, a medical college close to home means lower living costs and more opportunities to study and later serve in their own region. The seats for Tulu speakers are especially significant for local students.
How to apply
MBBS admission is based on NEET-UG scores, followed by counselling through the Karnataka Examinations Authority or the Medical Counselling Committee. For course and admission details, visit the official AIMSRC website.
