The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) issued high-wave and swell surge (Kallakadal) warnings for southern coastal regions, advising people to stay away from beaches and fishermen to stay off the sea.

Where the alert applied

The red alert covered all coastal districts of Kerala — from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod — along with parts of southern Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep, from 26 to 28 September, Indian Vartha reported. Waves of 1 to 1.5 metres were expected along the Kerala coast.

What is Kallakadal?

Kallakadal is a sudden swelling of the sea caused by long-period waves from distant storms in the southern Indian Ocean. It can flood the shore without any local wind or rain warning.

Safety advice

  • Avoid beaches and sea-based activities until the warning is withdrawn.
  • Fishermen should not take small boats out, and should keep vessels securely anchored in harbours.
  • Follow official updates from INCOIS and the local administration.
