Bowls of curry with rice on a wooden table

Coastal Karnataka's food is built on coconut, rice, fresh seafood and a confident hand with spices. Here is where to start.

Neer dosa

Thin, soft and lacy, neer dosa is made from a watery rice batter. It pairs with everything from coconut chutney to chicken curry.

Kori rotti

A Mangalorean classic: crisp, dry rice wafers soaked in a rich chicken curry just before eating.

Fish curry and rice

Every home has its own version, usually built on coconut, tamarind and red chillies. Mackerel, sardines and kingfish are popular choices.

Goli baje

Soft, fluffy fritters made with maida and curd — the perfect evening snack with a cup of filter coffee.

Udupi vegetarian fare

Udupi's temple cuisine gave the world the masala dosa. Look out for saaru (a thin rasam), gojju and banana-leaf meals.

Tips for first-timers

  • Ask for the spice level — coastal curries can be fiery.
  • Try the fish of the day at a small local restaurant.
  • Finish with kadubu or a glass of fresh sugarcane juice.
