The first year of college is exciting — and a big change from school. These habits will help you settle in quickly.
Go to every class in the first month
Attendance rules are strict in most colleges, and early lectures set the foundation for the whole semester. It's also the easiest way to make friends.
Get to know your teachers
Introduce yourself, ask questions after class and visit during office hours. Teachers remember students who show interest — and that helps when you need guidance or a recommendation later.
Join at least one club
NSS, NCC, sports, cultural, coding, debate — pick one that excites you. Clubs teach teamwork and leadership that classrooms can't.
Build a simple routine
- Review the day's notes for 30 minutes every evening.
- Keep one day a week free for rest and family.
- Track assignment deadlines in a single calendar.
Look after yourself
Eat well, sleep enough and talk to someone if you feel overwhelmed. Most colleges have counsellors and mentors — using them is a sign of strength.
Start thinking about skills
Internships, workshops and online courses during holidays can make a big difference by final year. Start small, but start early.
