Every year, scholarship money goes unclaimed simply because students don't know it exists or miss the deadline. A little organisation can change that.
Where to look
Government scholarships
The National Scholarship Portal lists many central and state schemes in one place. State departments also run their own scholarship portals — check your state's official education or welfare department website.
Private and trust scholarships
Many companies, foundations and community trusts offer scholarships based on merit, need or field of study. Your college notice board and alumni network are good places to hear about them.
College scholarships
Ask your college office about fee concessions, merit awards and endowment scholarships. Some are given automatically; others need an application.
Documents to keep ready
- Marks cards of previous exams
- Income certificate and caste certificate (if applicable)
- Aadhaar card and a bank account in the student's name
- Fee receipt and admission proof
- Passport-size photos
Scan everything once and keep the files in a folder so each application takes minutes, not days.
Tips for a strong application
- Read the eligibility rules carefully before you apply.
- Apply early — portals slow down near the deadline.
- Double-check bank details. Most failed payments are due to wrong account numbers.
- Save your application number and check the status regularly.
Beware of scams
Genuine scholarships never ask you to pay a fee to apply or to "release" funds. If someone does, report it.
