Yakshagana blends dance, music, dialogue and costume into a performance that can last the whole night. Here is what to expect.
The stories
Most performances are drawn from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Puranas. Each story, called a prasanga, is well known to regular audiences.
The music
The bhagavata (lead singer) narrates the story, backed by the chende and maddale drums. The singer sets the pace for the whole show.
The costumes
Huge headgear, bright face paint and layered costumes help the audience identify heroes, demons and gods at a glance.
Tips for first-timers
- Read the story beforehand so you can follow along.
- Arrive early for a good seat.
- Don't worry about understanding every word — the drama speaks for itself.
